About OBCOAP<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row overlay_dotted=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Foundation for Health Care Quality (FHCQ), a nationally recognized not-for-profit based in Seattle, is home to several programs\u00a0<\/span>dedicated to reducing variation<\/span>\u00a0in outcomes and improving the quality of care for patients. Using a unique model of clinician-led, data-driven collaboration, these clinical quality improvement programs have<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>over\u00a0<\/span>20 years, proven effective at promoting the changes which result both in better care for patients and in lower costs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\nOB COAP<\/b>,<\/b>\u00a0the O<\/b>bstetrical Care Outcomes Assessment Program\u00a0<\/b><\/span>uses provider-specific, chart-abstracted data about the care given during labor, delivery and the postpartum period as the basis for analysis and discu<\/span>ssion.<\/span>\u00a0Outcomes for newborns are also included. These data are analyzed to evaluate and compare implications of care decisions<\/span>\u00a0within the context of factors such as patient risk, demographics, practitioner type, practitioner role, etc<\/span>. Balancing measures to evaluate both the indended and unintended consequences of changes in practice are also examined. The collaborative nature of\u00a0<\/span>OB COAP\u00a0<\/span>allow<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0for opportunities to explore methods for actionable<\/span>\u00a0and sus<\/span>tainable improvements and FHCQ provides a neutral setting in which to do so.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does OB COAP make a difference for pregnant people and their babies?<\/span><\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Significant variation<\/span>\u00a0in care<\/span>\u00a0exists.\u00a0<\/span>For example – c<\/span>esarean section rates<\/span>\u00a0in Washington State<\/span>\u00a0vary between 1<\/span>5<\/span>% and 48%,<\/span>\u00a0regardless of hospital size,<\/span>\u00a0patient demographics and risk,<\/span>\u00a0practitioner type, use of standardized protocols, or level of care provided.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OB COAP provides<\/span>\u00a0an environment that promo<\/span>tes raising quality for everyone<\/span>. Choosing to deliver a<\/span>\u00a0baby at a site that participates in OB COAP\u00a0<\/span>can help\u00a0<\/span>childbearing people<\/span>\u00a0make informed choices and be assured that their practitioner and hospital<\/span>\u00a0or community provider<\/span>\u00a0of choice are engaged in an ongoing effort to provide the highest quality of care. Just as consumers would not buy an automobile from a company that only tests for safety against its own internal standards; patients are interested in knowing that their healthcare is subject to rigorous external quality measurement as well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does OB COAP make a difference for Obstetrical providers and hospitals?<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>By having access to accurate, real-time, clinical data, OB COAP participants can respond to and facilitate c<\/span>hanges addressing issues in\u00a0<\/span>quality and resource use.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0high quality\u00a0<\/span>clinical\u00a0<\/span>data\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>OB COAP allow hospitals and providers to be assured that\u00a0<\/span>benchmarking and comparison of important\u00a0<\/span>metrics\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>attribution<\/span>\u00a0to the appropriate provider<\/span>\u00a0are correct. The granularity of the data allows for drill down at the site, provider and patient level to understand not only what is happening, but why.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>pportunities for collaboration<\/span>\u00a0both within and across participating sites<\/span>\u00a0helps ensure consistent quality care<\/span>\u00a0for everyone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
