Motivational Interviewing in the SBIRT Model

Background

Many Washington State residents struggle with drug and alcohol abuse and our state shows variation in how and whether screening occurs, leaving many patients undiagnosed with no access to treatment. This workgroup met from April 2014 to January 2015 to develop recommendations organized around the following focus areas:

  • Reduction in stigma associated with alcohol and other drug screening, intervention, and treatment
  • Increasing appropriate alcohol and other drug use screening
  • Increasing capacity to provide brief intervention and/or brief treatment for alcohol and other drug misuse
  • Decreasing barriers for facilitating referrals to appropriate treatment facilities
  • Addressing the opioid addiction epidemic
